I found a great big rose bush on my morning walk the other day, in a traffic median of all places. It's sort of an odd spot to stop and draw a picture and drink my coffee, but I can't resist the rose hips.

Colored pencil and regular pencil, Moleskine. The colors didn't scan very well. The drawing is much browner than it looks on the screen, so maybe squint and use your imagination to get the proper look.

  1. Love these - to me, the sketch has a sort of 'stylised look'. No sure if that is the word I want, but when I looked at your sketch, I thought of Rennie Macintosh et al.

  2. It's always great to be greeted by something surprisingly pleasant in the morning, catchy enough for you to pen it down. :) Colors and the textures are phenomenal

  3. Beautiful, beautiful sketch! Is that the moleskine sketchbook? Just wondering because mine always scans so yellow!

  4. Lovely! Yes, I can see the Macintosh connection too now that marancat mentioned it. This is beautifully drawn.

  6. Beautiful rose hips - unique shaped flowers - stylized so nicely!

By the way, I do the same thing - rab moments where I can to be creative, and these moments are sparks in my day!

  7. Hmmm. I don't "rab moments", I "grab moments". Sorry. :)

  8. I agree -- the rose hips have so much more character than the rose bloom. Wonderful sketch!

  9. Rose hips allows you to go into the core with those fussy dried leaves and wonderful browns and fading greens - then, tea anyone?. Roses show brilliant color in velvety petals with a perfume that can make you dizzy. What's not to like? I really like this page...

  10. I like the idea of rabbing a moment...and I guess I never really knew what rose hips were before - thanks! Wonderful page as usual - great touch

  13. Nice lettering. A career in hand-drawn typography on the horizon?

  14. Thanks for all your comments, everyone! You encourage me to keep drawing. (Ben J., your comments about typography make me swoon...I love typography but don't have a feel for it myself. I'm a big fan of good type and graphic design, though.)

Gimme a minute and I'll be checking out what all of you are up to on your blogs.

  15. It's a great drawing even if I don't squint to try for the right colors. It's a great drawing of a part of the rose so often overlooked.
