After a subway ride to the Bronx and a transfer to the bus, it's just a 10-minute walk to Wave Hill.

Wave Hill is one of my favorite gardens to draw flowers, especially on Tuesdays when the admission is free.

On my return trek home, I met Chrissy. I heard her ask the subway clerk at the station how to get to Wave Hill and I heard the subway clerk say, "I don't know."

"I know," I said. "I just was just there."

I gave Chrissy the directions and drew a map for her, and then Chrissy said, "What's your name?"

We shook hands and introduced ourselves and that's how I know her name is Chrissy. She's from Florida.

I'm not pleased with today's drawing. The plant gave me a lot of challenges, and I felt lost while drawing it.

The garden sign said the plant's name is Angelica gigas and it's from Korea.

  1. What a strange looking flower before it comes to bloom. Well done on a really challenging to draw.

  2. Yes, it is a strange plant and that's what drew me to it. I'd like to go back and draw some more views - the shapes and colors are inticing.

While I drew, I heard a sprinkler nearby and I wanted to jump through it because it was such a hot day. I found out later the sprinkler noise was a tall plant rustling in the wind. A gardener at the park told me the tall plant is used to make wind instruments reeds (such as for oboes).

  3. Hahaha! You'd have lot of funny looks diving into plants to cool you down!

You should definitely draw more of the plant, such an oddity I think.

  4. it's beautiful! I was looking at all your drawings and I like them very much, especially how you colored then and the lighting is just great! ^^ Can't wait to see more of your work.

  5. Thank you, Alex. That's really encouraging because seeing color and light is totally new to me (shape is easier to see!) and I'm working on those two elements.
