My dad was a hunter. He was a fisherman too.
My dad's childhood friend was a butcher, and we had fresh, good cuts of meat at every meal from his meat shop, or we ate something my dad shot or caught.
We were a meat-eating family, and I hated every bite of it.
I grew up on pot-roasts and t-bone steaks, on venison, elk, pheasant, and quail. I grew up on walleye, pike, sunnies, and bass. I grew up to be a vegetarian.
Colored pencil and Sharpie pen in Moleskine sketchbook.
My dad used to bring in rabbit and fish too. I grew up hating meat, not for that reason. I just hated eating it. I also hated the thought of eating a poor animal so I turned vegetarian when I was 14 and have been one since. Great drawing, I can see it on the front of an apron!
ReplyDeleteLovely memory drawing and a great project. Please share the rest of your "poem drawings."
ReplyDeleteHeather, hmmm...I'm liking the apron idea. I like to wear aprons...hmmm...
ReplyDeleteShirley, I will do more but have to plan the page better since the ink I used didn't work well on top the pencil.
What a wonderful way to combine your art and writing. I, too, hope that you will share more of these. Your blog is a real joy to visit. I love your drawings and the stories that go with them.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ann!
ReplyDeletePowerful page! There are images in your words, too. And the fish looks beautiful - everything works perfectly together.
ReplyDeletei absolutely LOVE this poem/writing activity - as a teacher, i have used it every year with my class. the poetry they create is always amazing. thank you for sharing this - and even more so, thank you for sharing your creation - it is a powerful combination - and very nicely done!!!! :-)
ReplyDeletekazumiwannabe, thank you. I need to re-think the lettering because I'm not happy with it. But I've wanted to draw a sunfish for ages and it was fun to do!
ReplyDeleteJennifer, that is a GREAT project for a writing class. Brava to you for using it.
Like this artwork.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Terry. I like the fish, but the map and words didn't turn out how I planned. But now I know a bit more for the next time I try this. Thanks for stopping by.
