I drew the apple on the right-side of the page late last night in the kitchen. I thought about making rasberry tea, but it was hot and I didn't want to heat up the room anymore than it already was.

This morning I drew the left-side of the page, drinking hot, strong coffee and eating a cold knotweed muffin with rasberry jam.

Most people who know knotweed don't like knotweed. It's an invasive plant and it has a strange, primitive look. But if you harvest it in spring, you can eat it or freeze it to eat later. I think knotweed tastes like rhubarb.

Not everyone likes rhubarb either, but I do. My mom had a few plants growing in the backyard where I grew up, and I liked to pick a stalk, dip it in sugar, eat it, and pucker my face at the sour flavor.

This apple I drew was tiny, picked from a tree nearby. When I cut it open, the inside turned brown right away. I could see the white change color before my eyes, the effects of oxygen, I guess.

The fan was blowing in the kitchen this morning, not doing much to cool the room on this hot day in August.

  3. Mmmm rhubarb - probably my favourite fruit! I used to do exactly the same: dip it in sugar. Now I like to just eat it straight out of the ground - no sugar. You can see my mouth coming out of the back of my head! The more tart the fruit, the better.

Another great idea for you - design your own calendar for the kitchen! These images would go perfectly.

  4. Mark: I've been thinking about printmaking since looking at your blog. I think I need to see what supplies I have around here.

Betty: My son said the apple was too pointy, so I appreciate your comment on the shape (smile).

    Nancy: Thank you!

Heather: Ah, another rhubarb fan! And, another great idea from you. A calendar would be fun to design...though it would probably take me half a lifetime to finish it...but, so what! I love the way you come up with ideas.

  6. Do it online, takes minutes, or do it in Photoshop if you have it. I won't take a lifetime, 12 day - 12 drawings. I have complete faith in you!
